Juno. What do you mean for "mask"?

Vulcan. A mask is nothing but an image file in which you have painted a section of the image white. So, for example, let's take this image file showing Venus as sculpted by Prassiteles, the great sculptor. If ow, using one of the painting tools, say a brush, I make Venus' face white and then save the image. That file becomes a mask file.

Circe. (aside to Juno). I would not select Venus' image. She has put on some weight too, especially on the hips.

Juno. But Vulcan, why do you make Venus' face white and not, say, another color?

Vulcan. White is convenient and it matches the color of the backdrop against which you will sit in a moment when I will take your picture. The software makes white "transparent" to video, so the camera when pointed at you will not pick up the white, it will only pick up your face (or your face and body, should you so wish). In this case, since we have a body already (that of Venus), we will only pick up (with the video) your face and use the zoom until it matches perfectly the masked area in Venus' image, which was, as your recall, Venus' face at the beginning.
You can make your own masks

Juno. I see but do you have other pictures than Venus'?

Vulcan. Yes, Computer Friends sent me (with the Las Vegas Edition version of Picture-In-A-Picture) a collection of fabulous pictures on a CD. But with their system it is quite easy for me to scan and make my own masks. The technique is simple but quite original and it is well explained in Computer Friends' instructions.

Juno. I see and now show me some of your new masks. Vulcan (opens an album where he has stored the numbered samples of various nymphs and nymphettes). Which one would you like to choose, Juno? Here is Eurydia, a nymph from Corynth, she helped the shephered Thrysus to understand Computer Friends' Turbo Speed Print software, and here is Atalanta, she is gorgeous and has the lean body of an olympic sprinter, here is Diana whose picture I caught while she was hunting, or here is Hermione, the beautiful daugher of Menelaus and Helena.

Juno. Enough, I think that Hermione will do.

Vulcan. Well then, sit on the bench in front of the easily assembled and disassembled white backdrop and look at the camera, after I turn on the photo-studio lights which Computer Friends sent with my system.

Juno. I am ready.

Vulcan. Ok then, as I see from the collection the picture of Hermione is labeled as #5. Using the custom keyboard I press 5 and then the button "Load and Capture" and voila here comes the picture of Hermione with her face masked out. Now Juno, let me zoom with the camera on your lovely face until your features match the mask of Hermione. What do you think?

Juno. This is good Vulcan, but the color of my face does not match the colors in Hermione's picture. Unless you can match the colors, the picture does not look very realistic.

Vulcan. No problem. Computer Friends' custom keyboard features a button called AUTOMATIC COLOR CORRECTION. All I need to do is to press this button and the colors will be corrected. The program automatically makes a skillful calculation of the colors around the mask and selects the best combinations of shades and colors to ensure a perfect match. (presses the automatic color correction button). Not only, but to ensure a perfect match between live video and the mask the software includes what is called a "blending line" between the mask and the live video to ensure a most realistic and high quality output.

Juno. I like the picture very much - I cannot wait to give it to Jupiter. Can you print it now?
